"Project Global Buddies" is a project about connecting people who live and learn in different parts of Europe and beyond. Along the way, students will discover new cultures and customs and find out about people living there. There's therefore an increasing realisation that the lives of children and young people are shaped by what happens in other parts of the world and today, more than ever before, being part of a "global community" is shaping our everyday lives.
People are increasingly linked around the world socially, culturally, economically, environmentally and politically and we all share one planet, one future. The participants and partner schools involved in this project recognise how relevant this is to their students and believe that supporting and preparing them for living, learning and working in a global society is also the responsibility of educators.
Schools already do this by the development of international school projects, exchanges with schools in different countries, the awarding of Global Citizenship Certificates and integrating the concept of internationalisation within the school programme or curriculum. They do this because they know it will challenge students to ask questions, expose them to different cultures, increase language proficiency and prepare them for life-long learning. We all want our students to be inspired motivated learners but once in a while you need a little help to make all this seem possible.
Welcome to the world of travel buddies! These soft toys are exchanged between classrooms worldwide. They like to be included in everyday student activities, providing a "journal" of their lives. Students can take the "Travel Buddy" with them on trips, holidays or even take them home for a weekend. Students can then document their time with photos and text. They especially like to be sent to partner schools abroad, allowing students to follow journeys and experiences in different cultures through "their' eyes.
"Through the eyes of a travel buddy" is the key to this project as they have no opinions or thoughts of their own. They are brought to life by the experiences and ideas of children and with their imagination and thoughts, travel buddies can connect people not just in Europe but also worldwide.
Students provide the inspiration and "Global Buddies" provide the opportunities for the project.
